The old chapel of James was acquired by the painter Ignacio Zuloaga at the beginning of the 20th century to house his study and art collection. The building was reconstructed by the painter, although it conserves parts of the reception area and oratory for the travellers who waited for the boat passage that took them to the other shore of Urola Bay. Inside the chapel, Zuloaga placed a Christ from his friend, the sculptor Julio Beobide on the high altar, and a Madonna from Quintín de la Torre on one of its sides. Opposite the latter, we are able to admire a painted altarpiece from the 15th century, with scenes from the life of the Virgin.
It is in two parts: one dedicated to the work of Zuloaga, and the other to the collection he compiled throughout his life. This collection holds gothic paintings by El Greco, Zurbarán, the school of Goya, Vicente López, Gutiérrez Solana, and there are also two Rondin sculptures, among many other attractions (Greek ceramics, for example). The painter's living quarters were designed by the Biscay architect, Pedro Guimón, in a style characteristic of the area at the beginning of the century, although it mixes ceramic elements with eclecticism.
